Chiefs Unplugged: Pro Bowl Edition

Posted Dec 27, 2012

Players respond to their Pro Bowl invite

Less than 24 hours after the NFL announced the 2013 AFC-NFC Pro Bowl rosters, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Rome Crennel opened his Thursday press conference by congratulating his five Pro Bowl representatives, RB Jamaal Charles, S Eric Berry, P Dustin Colquitt and LBs Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson.

“Congratulations to Tamba Hali, Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson, Jamaal Charles and Dustin Colquitt,” Crennel said.

“Tamba has a good work ethic and I think everybody sees that and recognizes that and he is a productive guy. Eric Berry, we’ve mentioned that he was coming on and making plays and looking more like the Eric Berry of his rookie year and I think people have noticed that as well. Everybody knows about Jamaal, so I think that’s well deserved. Then Colquitt, I think sometimes it’s a little bit of a surprise with punters, but one of the things that he’s done is, he leads the AFC in balls inside the 20, balls downed inside the 20 and you talk about field position and helping your team, he definitely does that. He’s a good directional guy and then in that plus-50 area as we mentioned, he does a good job there also.

(As for) Derrick, his production; he’s a consistent, productive player that has a knack for the football. He can make plays in the backfield, he can make plays on the sideline, he can make plays down the field and I felt like with his production, that he would get some consideration. So, hats off to those guys for what they were able to accomplish – a well-deserved reward. So, there is a bright spot in this season, that we have guys that people respect the way they play, the way they conduct themselves and voted them to the Pro Bowl,” Crennel said.

After practice, I caught up with the Chiefs Pro Bowlers and asked them to share what the honor means:

*Eric Berry
“I wasn’t even expecting it. I wasn’t even thinking about the Pro Bowl. I was just thinking about finishing this season out and getting ready for next year. Like I said, I’m excited about it. It’s just a good time being with my family in Hawaii and getting to meet all the players, all the guys I play with on Madden and watched growing up. One thing is, I’ll probably play harder just because. I know it’s more relaxed, but I’m probably going to play harder.”

*Jamaal Charles
“I feel real honored this time going, especially after the ACL (injury), the second time; I just feel blessed and the light is shining on me right now.”

Dustin Colquitt
“Obviously, those guys are (going a) second time to the Pro Bowl and they are very well deserved. Any of those four guys, you can’t win games without them and they’re impact players and that’s why, regardless of our record, they were voted to the Pro Bowl, because they are great players. I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to represent the Chiefs in Hawaii and I’m excited. It’s my first time; everything’s going to be new and exciting.”

*Tamba Hali
“It’s an honor. The players see you as an elite player and the coaches are definitely worried about you each week, when you come in and play other teams. So, it’s an honor to be voted consecutively to go to Hawaii.”

*Derrick Johnson
“It’s a great deal of respect to be voted in to the Pro Bowl, this is my second year. As a player, you want your work to speak for itself on the field, without talking or boasting about it. So, people have recognized the way I’ve played this year and it’s a credit to the guys around me. My defensive line is a big part of what I do on the field. (And) once you get one taste of it (going to the Pro Bowl), you have to have some more.”

The AFC-NFC Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.
